Dear Friends:
In 1870, when waves of immigrant poor were sweeping into old New York, the Sisters of St. Mary had the visionary idea to establish a free hospital for sick and needy children. That year, the hospital, with just 15 beds and limited funding, opened in a rented house on West 40th Street (a section of the city notorious enough to be named Hell’s Kitchen).
The founding of St. Mary’s Free Hospital for Children under such adverse circumstances continues to be a lesson in courage, faith, and risk taking. The ability to transform a bold idea into a palpable reality has been the driving force behind the extraordinary success of St. Mary’s Healthcare System for Children, which now treats over 3,000 children on any given day.
St. Mary’s received special recognition for this pioneering spirit and commitment to excellence in 2004: St. Mary’s was chosen as one of only three healthcare organizations in the United States to receive the prestigious Circle of Life Award from the American Hospital Association for palliative and end-of-life care. This award reinforces St. Mary’s reputation as a national leader in pediatric care for children with life-threatening illnesses. But St. Mary’s Palliative Care Program is only one of many innovative treatment models that have revolutionized pediatric care. Please take a moment to review the next few pages, which highlight our groundbreaking programs and organizational accomplishments.
As we mark the 135th anniversary of St. Mary’s, we want to say thank you for believing in our mission and supporting our work on behalf of those most vulnerable in our society.
Only with your help can we maintain our goal, established over a century ago: that all children with special needs be treated with quality care, dignity, and respect.
With gratitude and best wishes,
