St. Mary's Healthcare System for Children Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and
Coma Recovery Program was the first pediatric program of its kind to be certified
in New York City. This program offers a full range of integrated services using
the most advanced techniques—from the most intensive inpatient rehabilitation
to our community-based services in the Institute for Child Development (ICD) or
home care. The goal of the program is to ensure optimal outcomes for each child
with a focus on community reintegration.
Populations We Serve
We treat children, from infancy to 18 years of age, who face cognitive and physical
disabilities related to an injury to the brain—for example, accident, infection,
cancer, or stroke. These children have received acute medical management and are
now ready for intensive rehabilitation. The program addresses the following:
Programs and Services We Offer
Intensive, comprehensive, and focused on the family, the program brings together
compassionate caregivers, who are expertly skilled in designing and delivering
a successful integrated plan for each child complete with bilingual support. In
addition to traditional rehabilitative therapies, the inpatient program utilizes
state of the art techniques including Botox injections and Baclofen pumps, and
includes complementary disciplines such as Reiki, therapeutic touch, acupuncture,
and animal-assisted therapy. Services include:
