BAYSIDE, QUEENS — Most of the children at St. Mary's hospital need more care than what their families are able to afford, but a recent event aimed to limit that burden.

The hospital, which serves children with complex healthcare needs, offers everything from intensive in-patient care to a medical day care program, but the expenses for these services exceed what 90 percent of patients can pay and what Medicaid is willing to cover.

At the St. Mary's annual gala last week, however, Baysiders helped raise $400,000, which will help support services that the hospital provides for families who otherwise wouldn't be able to afford the care.

"We’re so grateful for everyone who joined us for this special evening. These donations are critical for ensuring that the children at St. Mary’s have access to the highest quality care and the most cutting-edge treatments available," said Dr. Edwin Simpser, President and CEO of St. Mary’s Healthcare System for Children.

At the gala, which was hosted by Donny Deutsch, patients and parents shared what the hospital has meant for their families.

Simpser said the event was a reminder "of the tremendous obstacles the kids at St. Mary’s face each day, as well as the importance of community support for their growth and wellbeing."
