Recently, Lucille Messina, Garden City resident and author of “Waiting to Hear “Momma”: A Mother’s Memoir,” was invited to tour St. Mary’s Healthcare System for Children in Bayside Queens. St. Mary’s has been helping children and young adults with complex medical conditions heal and thrive for over 145 years. They are the largest provider of long-term care for children with complex medical conditions in New York State, and one of the nation’s leading providers of pediatric post-acute care.

Dr. Edwin Simpser, president and CEO, provided an extensive tour. Over the past 20 years, he has tirelessly devoted himself to advancing the organization’s mission of caring for children with special needs and their families.

After the visit, Lucille commented, “It has been a long time since I had walked the halls of this magnificent facility. With all the changes and upgrades I viewed, you certainly have lived up to your mission and have given kids and their families more than they had dreamed possible.”

Lucille’s special-needs daughter attended St. Mary’s, and she wrote about her emotional experiences as the mother of a medically fragile child. “Waiting to Hear “Momma”: A Mother’s Memoir” is a raw and honest journey. It is a must read for parents, professionals and caregivers.
