Farm to Table
What better way to learn about nutrition and the importance of healthy eating than to grow and prepare the food yourself? That’s the premise behind Farm to Table at St. Mary’s Healthcare System for Children, a program that promotes nutrition education through hands-on gardening and cooking classes.
Hands-on Nutrition Education
Held weekly at our main campus in Bayside, hospital patients and medical day healthcare program participants work side by side with instructors and their families in gardening and cooking classes. In the warmer months, they plant vegetables and herbs in raised garden beds and harvest the fresh produce, which is then used in our cooking classes.
While the children and adult participants find Farm to Table fun, the multidisciplinary program incorporates nutrition, rehabilitation and therapeutic recreation goals, making it a vital addition to our child life programs. It not only improves daily life for our children and prepares families to help them eat healthier at home, but it also advances vocational and life skills to better prepare participants to be self-reliant and productive members of their communities.
