This summer program for children with hemiparesis or hemiplegia at St. Mary’s Kids at Roslyn provides intensive therapy—and fun—for four- to 11-year-olds.
Combining age-appropriate play and adaptive skills practice with therapy, the four-week Helping Hands program is held Monday through Thursday throughout July. During each six-hour day, children engage in a variety of activities such as circle time, yoga and arts and crafts, while receiving individualized treatment to help them develop functional skills for every day activities.
Led by a team of caring clinicians including a physiatrist, physical therapists and occupational therapists, the multidisciplinary program uses various treatment approaches—including constraint induced movement therapy (CIMT)—to improve the use of hands and arms. The helping hands program also includes activities of daily living to improve independence as well as daily individual occupational and physical therapy.
