“St. Mary’s is a place where families can find the best care for their child and provides them the support they need to care for a child with special needs,” says Sedfrey Fernandez, a Supervisor for the Medical Day Healthcare Program at St. Mary’s Hospital for Children.
The medical day care program at St. Mary’s Healthcare System for Children offers children and young adults with cognitive and physical disabilities the therapeutic and rehabilitative services they need and the opportunities to socialize and make friends. Sedfrey works with the participants to promote skills, confidence and independence in a nurturing and fun environment.
Sedfrey takes the mission of St. Mary’s to heart. On a daily basis, he puts forth his best effort to help improve the health and quality of life for children with special needs and their families. For Sedfrey, St. Mary’s means a lot to our families because of what we are able to give them: a place where families can find the best care for their child.
One of Sedfrey’s most memorable experiences at St. Mary’s was with a patient who joined the MDHC program. Before joining the program, the patient had lost their ability to walk. After a few years of intensive rehabilitation at St. Mary’s, the patient was able to get out of the wheelchair and walk again. It was a moment that Sedfrey was happy to have been a part of.
