BAYSIDE, QUEENS — Patients at St. Mary's Hospital for Children got their first driving lesson on Friday.

Physical therapists at the Bayside hospital worked with the organization Go Baby Go to customize five toy cars for patients who have trouble walking. St. Mary's provides long-term pediatric care and often serves children with complex medical issues.

"The patients in our care often face serious challenges, so we’re thrilled to be able to give them this opportunity to move and play,” Elizabeth Alphonso, the hospital's physical therapy supervisor, said.

The St. Mary's and Go Baby Go teams installed custom modifications on the cars, then two patients took their new wheels for a spin along the hospital's hallways.

Hospital staffers will use the techniques to create personalized rides for future patients with limited mobility.
