BAYSIDE, QUEENS — St. Mary's Hospital for Children celebrated its 150th anniversary this week with a special recognition from Northeast Queens officials.

The health care facility was founded in 1870 by the Sisters of the Community of St. Mary, though back then it called Manhattan home.

Now based in Bayside, the 124-bed inpatient facility specializes in caring for children with complex medical conditions and disabilities.

“We’re proud to carry the same commitment to loving, personalized care that our founders had when they established a free hospital for children in 1870,” St. Mary’s President and CEO Dr. Edwin Simpser said. “We look forward to celebrating another 150 years of caring for New York’s children through innovative approaches to treatment that allow our children to thrive.”

State Sen. John Liu, who joined New York Assembly Member Edward Braunstein and Justin Connor, representing the office of Congressman Tom Suozzi, in presenting the hospital with a proclamation, noted the hospital's legacy of providing compassionate care and enlightening society about what he called "the continuing potential of the patients it has cared for."
