Big Hearts Walk for St. Mary’s Kids Raises Over $100K

This past Sunday, October 17th, hundreds of community volunteers, St. Mary’s staff members, sponsors, patients and their families participated in the Annual Big Hearts Walk for St. Mary’s Kids at the Bronx Zoo. Together, we raised more than $100,000 to help fund programs and treatment for our patients.

St. Mary’s Healthcare System for Children is New York City’s only post-acute pediatric care facility. The Annual Big Hearts Walk is an essential fundraiser to help St. Mary’s continue to provide high-quality care to every child that needs it—regardless of a family’s ability to pay. More than 90 percent of the patients at St. Mary’s need a level of care that exceeds what their families can afford and what Medicaid is able to cover.

“The pandemic has been particularly traumatic for families with medically fragile children, so we’re thrilled to finally be at the point where many of us can come together for this fun, outdoor event. Not only are we raising needed funds, but we’re also raising the spirits of our kids,” said Dr. Edwin Simpser, President and CEO of St. Mary’s Healthcare System for Children. “The proceeds from the walk will help ensure we can continue to provide the highest level of care to our patients and we’re incredibly grateful for the community support we’ve received.”

Following the walk, participants enjoyed full-day access to the Bronx Zoo’s annual Halloween tradition, Boo at the Zoo.
