Exploring the World with St. Mary’s Kids in Motion Club

At St. Mary‘s Hospital for Children, we are always seeking new and innovative ways to provide comprehensive care and support to our young patients. Recently, we launched an exciting initiative that has been making a significant impact on the lives of our children and their families – the “Kids in Motion” club. This club is a testament to our commitment to inclusivity and mobility, and it has been inspiring to witness the positive changes it has brought to our young patients.

We established a Recreation and Rehab Collaboration Committee a few months ago to enhance our children’s well-being through various group activities. Some of these activities include storytime paired with speech therapy, storytime art, healing arts, and aquatic therapy. However, one of the standout initiatives to emerge from this committee is the “Kids in Motion” club.

The primary goal of the Kids in Motion club is to encourage our young patients to embrace movement and experience the world around them. It is about going beyond the confines of their hospital units and immersing themselves in activities that promote inclusivity and mobility. The club convenes on ce a week, bringing together children with varying degrees of mobility – from those who can self-ambulate to those who require caregiver assistance.

The Power of Engagement

One of the remarkable observations we have made during Kids in Motion sessions is the significant impact on engagement and diversional play during rehab therapy.

The Kids in Motion club organized numerous unforgettable activities and outings during the summer. We celebrated a special “Christmas in July” experience and engaged in various adaptive sports events at the playground. However, the highlight was our first-ever off-campus adventure – a leisurely walk to the beautiful Bayside Marina.

To ensure the safety of all participants, our nursing team provided invaluable support during our off-campus trips. We are immensely grateful for their dedication and collaboration in making these adventures possible.

The success of the Kids in Motion club underscores our commitment to holistic care and the well-being of our patients and their families. We are excited about the journey ahead and the countless opportunities to make a positive difference in the lives of our young patients. With each step, we are helping these remarkable children experience the world in new and meaningful ways.
