Long Island Board of Realtors® is Driven to Help New York’s Children with Special Needs

LIBOR Supports St. Mary’s Healthcare System for Children’s V.A.N Program, Walk Event, and Names St. Mary’s Beneficiary of Educational Conference

When Realtor® Laura Copersino, President of the North East Queens Chapter of the Long Island Board of Realtors® (LIBOR) and Rosalie Labbate, Committee Chair, visited St. Mary’s Healthcare System for Children in 2007, they were driven to help the 4,000 children with special needs that St. Mary’s cares for each day at the Hospital, at home, and in the community.

The NE Queens Chapter of LIBOR, the largest local Realtor® Board in the country serving 23,000 real estate professionals throughout Nassau, Suffolk and Queens, was determined to help children in the communities they serve. They found their answer in St. Mary’s Vehicular Access to Neighborhoods (V.A.N) Program, a mobile healthcare program designed to bring specialized medical and rehabilitative care into the homes of children with special needs, including those in difficult-to-serve neighborhoods throughout the New York Metropolitan area.

A generous $20,000 donation from LIBOR helped to underwrite the cost of operating one of the V.A.N. Program vehicles for one year. Funded through philanthropic support such as this, the ground transportation program provides essential home care services to children and families affected by chronic health issues such as HIV/AIDS, as well as young children in need of Early Intervention evaluations to assess developmental delays.

The van sponsored by Queens County Realtors® together with the support from the Long Island Board of Realtors®, was “wrapped” with larger than life images of St. Mary’s kids and healthcare professionals and was unveiled to thousands of supporters at the 6th Annual Walk for St. Mary’s Kids and Family Fun Day on Sunday, May 17, 2009.

In addition to supporting St. Mary’s V.A.N Program, LIBOR continues to show their dedication and commitment to children with special needs. LIBOR was a Guardian Partner of the Walk for St. Mary’s Kids, had members on the Walk Committee, participated in the Family Fun Day exhibits, and formed a 35-person Walk team.

LIBOR has also named St. Mary’s the beneficiary of their 21st Annual LIBOR Education Conference and Trade Show to be held on June 4th at Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. The annual event usually attracts over 600 agents and includes panel discussions, breakout sessions and presentations by top realty professionals.
