Patients at St. Mary’s Hospital for Children Host Earth Day Parade and Learn the Importance of “Being Green”

New York’s Leading Construction and Engineering Companies Join “Green” Efforts and Help St. Mary’s Kids Create Earth Day Floats

Young patients of St. Mary’s Hospital for Children celebrated Earth Day with a spectacular parade featuring creative floats all based on “being green” themes.

The afternoon was uplifted when St. Mary’s kids paraded around the hospital grounds with signs saying “RECYCLE” “SAVE OUR EARTH,” and “KEEP IT CLEAN,” as they were cheered on by staff and family who all joined to celebrate one of the most important days of the year that remind us all how crucial it is to protect the earth.

With the help of high powered engineers and architects from New York’s most notorious construction and engineering companies, Turner Construction and Langan International, the kids unleashed their creative sides and designed theme based floats using the themes both staff and patients picked out which were; Reduce, Reuse, Recycle; Save the Wildlife, Horticulture; and Recycling.

The unique partnership between Turner, Langan and St. Mary’s kids was formed since the two leading companies visited St. Mary’s a few years ago and formed an unbreakable bond with the young patients and their families.

At the end of the parade, everyone joined in a short award presentation to recognize patients and staff for their hard work and efforts to bring an educational and exciting Earth Day parade to the hospital.

St. Mary’s, one of the region’s largest providers of post-acute care for children with special needs, has been committed to creating an environmentally-friendly atmosphere for patients, family and visitors, and staff and are dedicated to teaching St. Mary’s kids about the benefits of recycling and keeping the earth safe.

In 2006 St. Mary’s received the prestigious Making Medicine Mercury Free Award from Hospital for a Healthy Environment (H2E) for creating mercury-free alternatives throughout the healthcare system. St. Mary’s energy reduction efforts, comprehensive shredding and recycling program, and the overall green initiatives of staff, patients, and families, have helped save thousands of trees and thousands of dollars in energy.
