ST. MARY’S HEALTHCARE SYSTEM FOR CHILDREN SELECTED TO RECEIVE 2022 HOME CARE ASSOCIATION QUALITY AND INNOVATION AWARD

St. Mary’s Healthcare System for Children has been selected to receive the Home Care Association (HCA) 2022 Quality and Innovation Award in recognition of their Hospital-Home Care Collaboration model and leadership participation in the Statewide Hospital and Home Care Collaborative initiative as well as their development of the HCA Pediatric Sepsis Tool.

This award is given to individuals or agencies within home care and hospice that have implemented an innovative clinical model, workforce support, patient or staff education program, or other initiatives with demonstrated outcomes in patient satisfaction, population health improvement, or cost reduction.

The outstanding clinical staff at St. Mary’s worked intensively with HCA and sepsis clinical experts from around the country to develop the HCA Pediatric Sepsis Tool – the first in the nation – to help home care clinicians identify sepsis and stop it for the at-risk pediatric home care population. Sepsis is a potentially life-threatening condition that occurs when the body’s extreme response to an infection damages its own tissue, leading to tissue damage, organ failure, and death.

The Pediatric Sepsis Tool will be a game-changer in pediatric sepsis prevention. This innovative tool developed in part by St. Mary’s will soon be utilized in every region of New York State and promoted nationally.

“We are incredibly proud of our dedicated staff at St. Mary’s, who work tirelessly to provide the highest quality of care to some of New York City’s most critically ill and injured children,” said Dr. Edwin Simpser, President and CEO of St. Mary’s Healthcare System for Children. “We hope the Pediatric Sepsis Tool is able to improve the quality of care for sepsis both in New York State and nationwide.”

St. Mary’s was formally recognized for these accomplishments at an Awards Luncheon. The ceremony was held on May 5th at HCA’s Annual Conference on May 4th-6th at the Saratoga Hilton in Saratoga Springs, New York.
