The Sweet Smell of Community Service

Students at I.S. 59 host 3-day bake sale to help seriously ill children at St. Mary’s

Bayside, NY – As school winded down in June and thoughts drifted to summer fun for most school-aged children, the Student Council of I.S. 59 in Springfield Gardens kept focused on community service activities. The Council, comprised of enthusiastic sixth, seventh and eighth graders, recently raised $400 for St. Mary’s Hospital for Children as part of their community service program.

“We raised money for the children with a bake sale,” explained one member of the Student Council during the group’s visit to St. Mary’s. But this was no ordinary bake sale. The children received donations from the community, parents, and the local Pathmark grocery store to support a 3-day sale.

Six members of the school’s Student Council, along with their advisors, Wanda Lowe and Barbara DeBerry, visited St. Mary’s Hospital for Children on June 14. They toured the facility and learned how their hard work will benefit the children at the hospital.
