As we celebrate Volunteer Appreciation Week (April 19th–26th), we are honored to shine a spotlight on Mona Elzahab, an exceptional volunteer whose compassion, creativity, and dedication have made a lasting impact at St. Mary’s Healthcare System for Children.
Mona is a senior at Hunter College and has spent the past year volunteering with Matthew, one of St. Mary’s longtime patients. Matthew is medically complex and non-verbal, communicating through sounds and hand gestures. Through patience, empathy, and consistency, Mona has built a meaningful connection with him, demonstrating that communication goes far beyond words.

Their time together is filled with joyful moments: art activities, puppet shows, movie days, and visits throughout the building. Mona has worked closely with Matthew and his mother to better understand his unique communication style, meeting him exactly where he is and engaging with him in ways that feel safe, fun, and affirming. Their relationship is a powerful example of how consistent volunteerism can foster trust, joy, and genuine connection.
In addition to her work with Matthew, Mona provides friendly visits to children and young adults on 3CU. She regularly goes above and beyond—dressing up in festive costumes for Halloween, Christmas, and St. Patrick’s Day to bring smiles and laughter to patients throughout the unit.
Mona’s impact has not gone unnoticed. She was recently named the 2026 NYSHFA Young Adult Volunteer of the Year, an honor that recognizes her extraordinary commitment and heart for service. She will be formally recognized at the NYSHFA Annual Conference on Wednesday, June 3, in Albany.
We are incredibly grateful for Mona and the warmth, creativity, and dedication she brings to St. Mary’s. Her story beautifully reflects the importance of volunteer programs and the profound difference one person can make.
Thank you, Mona, for everything you do for St. Mary’s Kids.
